Book Cover:
Book Summary: This creative book has a hungry
caterpillar eating his way through different foods each day of the week. At the end of the week he eats far too much
and gets a stomachache. After eating a
nice green leaf, the caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly.

Impressions: I love this book and especially the
illustrations. Carle’s collage-like
illustrations paired with the holes eaten through by the hungry caterpillar are
so clever. The story is somewhat
interactive as well with the growing pages, including a hole through each a new
food.
Professional Review: Anita Silvey
comments, “In the story a winsome caterpillar eats a variety of foods until he
finally turns into a butterfly. While
showing a simple story of transformation, the book presents very young children
with such concepts as counting, days of the week, and the life cycle of a
butterfly, in bold, graphic art.”

children. (p. 6). New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin Company.
Library Use: The story of the caterpillar’s metamorphosis
into a butterfly can be used to promote curiosity in science. The librarian could plan to feature this book
when the school has their science week or science fair.
