Book Cover:
Book Summary: A collection of short poems and illustrations capturing the the essence of jazz from its New Orleans roots.
APA Reference:
Myers, W. D. (2009). Jazz. New York, NY: Holiday House.
Impressions: Each of the poems in this collection strives to describe a different aspect of Jazz. I particularly like how the poems themselves discuss Jazz in the musical sense, but the illustrations focus also on the lifestyles of the musicians. It depicts musicians on streets, in clubs, and in marching bands to give the reader added insight into the feeling of the music. The way the author intertwines emotional descriptions with musical terms specific to Jazz as a genre invokes thoughts of conversing with a seasoned New Orleans saxophone player.
Professional Review: "In his book, Myers makes jazz accessible to children by offering an explanatory introduction, a glossary of jazz terms, and a timeline of important events for the musical genre."
Oleck, J. (2007, February 28). Walter Dean Myers nabs poetry award for jazz. Retrieved from http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6420379.html
Library Use: In a library setting the teacher could implement a writing activity about how different musical styles make you feel or the environments different music styles conjure in the minds of the readers.
